Countries near Russia with (or reinstated) conscription
Here are several countries — many bordering or close to Russia — that have compulsory or draft-based military service now (or recently reintroduced it).
| Country | Notes on conscription / preparedness |
|---|---|
| Finland | Maintains universal conscription for men (with civilian service as an alternative). Because Finland shares a long border with Russia, Finland’s conscription system is central to its defence strategy. |
| Estonia | Requires men aged roughly 18–27 to complete military service (~8–11 months). Because Estonia is close to Russia’s northwestern regions, its conscription system is part of a broader “total defence” approach. |
| Latvia | Reintroduced compulsory national service as of January 2024 for men aged roughly 18–27. Service lasts about 11 months; there is also an option for alternative (civil) service for conscientious objectors. |
| Lithuania | After suspending conscription, Lithuania brought it back following Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea. Young men are subject to the draft. |
| Sweden | Re-introduced conscription in 2018 for both men and women (after previously abolishing it). This step was driven in part by Russia’s growing aggression and as part of bolstering regional defense. |
| Denmark | Has mandatory conscription for men (and as of recent reforms, service is being extended and more people may be called up). |
| Norway | Maintains conscription (or selective conscription) for national defense. |
