Viewing Questions:

Who are the stakeholders in this housing conflict
    • What are each group’s arguments or concerns?

    • Which stakeholders do you think have the strongest case, and why?

    • Balance between environmental protection vs. human need

    • The land proposed for the housing is habitat for bighorn sheep. How should communities decide when to protect nature and when to develop land for people’s needs?

    • Can you think of ways to build housing without harming the environment, or compromise solutions?

    Impact of rising housing costs in tourist/resort towns
    • How does having lots of second homes and vacation rentals affect the people who live year-round and work in the town?

    • What are social or economic consequences (e.g., workforce shortages, commuting long distances, community character)?

    Role of government and corporations
    • In the case of Vail, both the company (Vail Resorts) and town government are involved. What responsibilities do you think each has in solving the housing shortage?

    • When (and how) should the government intervene (e.g. zoning laws, taxes, incentives, land purchase)?

    • What kind of future do you think would be best re: Revy Housing? Draw with your group your best home ideas for Revy to deal with the current housing crisis.
